1. Agreement to these Terms
These Terms of Use (the “Terms”) are an agreement between you and Qurba (“Qurba”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using the Qurba mobile app, the website at qurba.us, or any related service (together, the “Service”), you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use Qurba.
Qurba is a community-powered directory that helps Muslims discover and support masjids and Muslim-owned businesses and community places. It is directed to users in the United States and Canada. These Terms pair with our Privacy Policy, which describes how we handle your information, and with the Community Guidelines, which are part of these Terms.
2. Who can use Qurba
- You must be 13 or older to use Qurba. If you are under 18, you may only use it with a parent or guardian's permission.
- You agree to give accurate information when you sign up and to keep it current.
- You are responsible for keeping your login secure and for everything that happens under your account.
- One account per person. If we suspend or remove your account, you may not create a new one to get around that.
3. What Qurba is (and what it isn't)
Qurba is a directory built largely from information submitted by users and the community. Businesses, reviews, photos, verification signals and halal-status information come from users, business owners and third parties, not from Qurba's own inspection.
- We review before publishing. Community-submitted places go through a review step before they appear in the app, and business claims are verified before any owner tools are granted.
- Review is not a guarantee. Our review checks that a submission looks legitimate. It does not certify that a listing is accurate, that a business is what it claims, that a business is Muslim-owned, or that any halal information is correct (see Section 11).
- Qurba is a place to find and share information. It is not professional, religious, dietary, medical, financial or legal advice. Use your own judgment before relying on anything you find here.
4. Your content
You keep ownership of what you post: your reviews, ratings, photos, votes, vouches, lists and submissions (“your content”).
By posting, you give Qurba a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, display, reproduce, adapt (for example, to resize a photo or generate a link preview) and share your content within the Service and its features, so we can operate and promote the Service. This licence lasts as long as your content is on Qurba. If you delete content, the licence ends, except for copies already shared with others, cached link previews that expire on their own, and copies we must keep by law.
You are responsible for your content, and you confirm that:
- you have the right to post it;
- it does not break these Terms, the Community Guidelines, or the law;
- for photos: they are yours to share, and you are not posting identifiable other people without their permission.
5. What you can do on Qurba
Depending on the features available at the time, you can: create and edit a profile under a display name; browse places on a map and by search and category; submit places; leave reviews, ratings and photos; vote on halal status and vouch for Muslim-owned businesses; follow other users; save and share lists; earn Khair points and appear on the leaderboard; and, where owner tools are available, claim and manage a listing.
You can edit or delete your own contributions, your votes, and your account at any time. See how to delete your account.
6. Community Guidelines
The Community Guidelines are the rules for participating on Qurba and are part of these Terms. In short: be honest and first-hand, protect halal and ownership integrity, be respectful, keep content clean and lawful, respect others' privacy and rights, and use Qurba as intended. Breaking them can get content removed or your account suspended.
7. Reviews, ratings and business responses
- You may edit or delete your own reviews at any time.
- Where owner tools are available, business owners may respond to reviews on their claimed listing and may report a review they believe breaks the guidelines.
- We remove reviews only when they violate the guidelines (for example fake, off-topic, harassing or conflict-of-interest reviews), not because a business disagrees with an honest negative review. Qurba does not act as a judge in a factual dispute between a user and a business.
8. Business listings and claims
- Submitting a place. If you add a place, you confirm the information is accurate to the best of your knowledge. Listings are public information.
- Muslim-owned. Qurba lists masjids and businesses that are Muslim-owned. Ownership is stated by the submitter and may be vouched for by the community. Qurba does not independently verify who owns a business, and a listing does not make any representation about the owner's beliefs or practice.
- Claiming a listing. Where available, business owners can claim a listing, which is verified by Qurba before owner tools are granted. Claiming does not transfer ownership of the listing or its reviews to you. Owner tools are not offered to everyone at all times and may be paused, changed or withdrawn.
- Owner updates. Where business-to-follower updates are available, they must be relevant to the business and are subject to reasonable frequency limits we set. Users can unfollow at any time, and we can revoke the ability for spam or abuse.
- Removal requests. Because listings are public information, Qurba is not obliged to remove a business simply because it is asked to. We review removal requests case by case. We will remove a listing that is actually a private individual's home, or a person rather than a public-facing business, and we may remove any listing at our discretion.
9. Khair points and the leaderboard
- You can earn Khair points, roles and streaks, and appear on the leaderboard, for contributing (submissions, reviews, photos, votes and vouches).
- Points have no monetary value. They cannot be bought, sold, transferred or redeemed for cash. They reflect activity and standing within the app only.
- Qurba may adjust, reset or remove points and roles, including points gained by gaming the system or breaking these Terms.
- If we introduce ways to use points in the future, we will update these Terms with the applicable rules first.
10. Reporting and moderation
- You can report content, listings or accounts that break the guidelines. Reports are reviewed by a person; nothing is removed automatically.
- We may remove content, limit features, or suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, and we may do so without prior notice when needed to protect users or comply with the law.
- Copyright. If you believe content on Qurba infringes your copyright, contact us at support@qurba.us with enough detail to identify the content and your claim, and we will handle it through our notice-and-takedown process.
11. Halal status and verification: important disclaimer
For some places Qurba displays a halal-status tier (such as Unverified, Community Assured, Owner Assured, Halal Certified or Expired Certification) and for businesses a “community vouched” signal. These reflect information from third parties, business owners and the community, not Qurba's own certification, inspection or guarantee.
- “Halal Certified” means a business has indicated certification by an outside halal-certifying body. Qurba does not perform or guarantee that certification.
- “Owner Assured”, “Community Assured” and “Community vouched” reflect what a business owner or other users have said, not any verification by Qurba.
- “Unverified” means nobody has confirmed anything yet. It is not an accusation.
- Status can change, and information may be incomplete, outdated or wrong.
You are responsible for confirming a business's halal status, ownership and other details directly with the business or a certifying authority before relying on them. Qurba is not liable for information that turns out to be inaccurate.
12. This website
The website at qurba.us presents the app and hosts these documents. It also generates link-preview images for links shared from the app (for example, a place shared to a group chat). Those previews draw only on information that is already public in the app. You may link to any page on this website. You may not scrape, mirror or frame it, or use its content to train models or build a competing directory without our written permission.
13. Qurba's intellectual property
The Qurba name, mark, app, website, design, and the structure and arrangement of the directory are owned by Qurba and protected by law. Except for your own content, you may not copy, modify, distribute or create derivative works from the Service without our written permission. Feedback you send us may be used without obligation to you.
14. Termination
You can stop using Qurba and delete your account at any time. We can suspend or end your access if you break these Terms, if it is needed to protect users or comply with the law, or if we stop offering the Service. Sections that by their nature should survive (including the licence for already-shared content, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification and governing law) continue after your account ends.
15. Disclaimers
Qurba is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent allowed by law, we make no warranties, express or implied, about the accuracy, reliability, availability or fitness for a particular purpose of the Service or its listings, reviews, prayer times, directions, or halal and ownership information. Prayer times and distances are estimates from third-party sources. You use Qurba, and rely on its content, at your own discretion.
16. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Qurba and its founders, team, volunteers and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, including lost profits, lost data or reputational harm, arising from your use of the Service or reliance on its content. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of one hundred U.S. dollars (US $100) or the amount you paid us in the past twelve months. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
17. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Qurba and its founders, team and volunteers from claims, losses or costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your content, your misuse of the Service, or your violation of these Terms or of someone else's rights, to the extent allowed by law.
18. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the U.S. state in which Qurba is established, and the federal laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Before filing any formal claim, you agree to first contact us so we can try to resolve the issue informally within 60 days. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought in the state or federal courts located in that state, unless applicable law gives you the right to bring it where you live. Nothing in these Terms limits any non-waivable consumer rights you have under the laws of your province, state or country.
19. App stores
Your use of Qurba is also subject to the rules of the app store you downloaded it from (for example, Apple's App Store terms). The app store provider is not a party to these Terms, has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for the app, and is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms with the right to enforce them against you.
20. Changes and contact
We may update these Terms as Qurba evolves. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email and update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Qurba after that means you accept the updated Terms.
